![]() My mix has only existed off my hard drive for two weeks, when I uploaded those videos.Like many Lips fans i became familiar with them via 'The Soft Bulletin' and it's 5/5, 10 out of 10, album of the year etc accolades back in 1999. Most are probably just the four discs loaded together, maybe with the volume brought down so it's not a complete clipping mess. I suspect that making one CD "normal" and the other three "weird" could have been a condition of the album's release: "You've got to at least try to make it listenable."ĭespite my opinion of Pitchfork, this is a fantastic little film, and there's a lot of discussion about the creation of Zaireeka in its first half - as this and The Soft Bulletin were very closely related ("Race For The Prize" was originally intended for this one, hence the two different drum tracks).ĭefinitely not mine. Now you're right that, for most of the songs, there is a "main" CD, and the other three are mainly for atmosphere, texture, and insanity but it definitely wasn't "let's take these relatively normal songs and then add a bunch of crap to the other CDs" - the songs were specifically designed to be listened to with all discs going at once. The album was specifically designed this way and the songs were written and recorded to accommodate the four discs. My mix has only existed off my hard drive for two weeks, when I uploaded those videos. "March Of The Rotten Vegetables" is something similar at the beginning, but during the insane drum solo, the other CDs have overdriven, echo-laden, and messed-up samples of the same solo being played over certain parts.Ĭlick to expand.Definitely not mine. Something like "The Train Runs Over The Camel" has the same vocal on all four CDs, but nothing else in common. If these were normal songs, then yes, but the structure of these songs is weird. Not sure what you mean by extracting the multi-tracks. The gimmick only overpowers the music in a handful of spots. And as an album, it's weird as hell, but it's actually pretty good. Zaireeka is meant to be an experience first and an album second. "How Will We Know?" is a nice little song on CD #2 and pure sonic terrorism on the other three CDs - but with some awesome background parts underneath the horror. "Okay I'll Admit" has two CDs of vocal parts and two CDs of drum and bass parts (or was it only one? I can't remember, it's been a while). On my mix-down, I lined them up (a mammoth task, I assure you) and it's still jittery. The closest thing to a normal "song" on here is probably "Riding To Work", but even so, the bass at the end of that song is deliberately out-of-sync.
